Dr. Gundu H. R.
Rao completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Mysore in 1957 and
post-graduate studies at the University of Poona. He worked at the Central Food
Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, as a CSIR Fellow (1960–1965) before
moving to the U.S. In 1965, he earned a Ph.D. in Grain Science from Kansas
State University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in pharmacology at the
University of Minnesota (1970). In 1972, Dr. Rao joined the University of
Minnesota Medical School, where he became a tenured professor in Laboratory
Medicine and Pathology, focusing on thrombosis. He directed thrombosis research
at the Lillehei Heart Institute until his retirement in 2012. Dr Rao has
published over 400 research articles and edited 10+ books on vascular biology
and thrombosis. He advised medical device companies like Medtronic, 3M, and
Boston Scientific. He contributed to global research through sabbaticals at
institutions such as the Royal College of Surgeons in London and the University
of Padua, Italy. As a Senior Fellow of the UN's TOKTEN program (1990–1993), he
trained researchers in India. In 1993, he founded the South Asian Society on
Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis and organised international conferences
globally.
